Good alt for a Ken player to learn some tactics

I have been playing an aggressive cross-up / mix-up Ken since SF4 release. I have not made as much progress as I would have liked. One problem I have is that my Ken is very vulnerable (bad defense) and often I miss good opportunities to attack. I'm thinking learning another character might help me to learn some techniques I can apply back to Ken. Is there a good character to help me learn some tricks/defensive measures? Should I try a turtle like Guile or Balrog type to break me out of this pattern?

Maining Dictator has helped out my overall game tremendously.  I find that if you find a charge character to main, especially one who does not have a projectile, you think about the core mechanics of the game and how to use the basics to deal with a zoning character like a Guile, Ken or Ryu.  I know it sounds corny/broken record-ish, but really, the guy who uses the basics to their fullest potential is the guy who wins.

It's like the saying goes, "Offense wins games, defense wins championships".  An agressive Ken can only take you so far until one whiffed move will cost you the round.  I really like Dictator because of his ability to close ground OR get away quickly from alot of situations.  He has a LOT of options, so i'd choose him to practice with for some time.

If you want to work on your defense, then pick a Charge character, and learn how they work.  Charge characters (Boxer and Guile especially) tend to turtle much more than the other characters, thanks in part to how the move inputs work.  The one thing that these characters will teach most of all is patience.  If you like to play an aggressive Ken, then a Charge character will teach you to bide your time and jump in when the moment is right.

I like to have a Rotate main and a Charge main, and I recommend you do the same.  Happy hunting!

The idea with choosing a charge character is actually a pretty good idea. I used to main Balrog in Vanilla, but now I mess around with Juri and Cody. Playing as a charge character previously definitely helped my defense  a lot, and if you really are having issues then I would suggest doing the same. If i were you I would choose Balrog, most people thing he is very defensive but I think different, so if you do plan on going back to Ken the aggressiveness will transfer over nicely along with a the good defense.

Try playing a defensive Ryu. The transition shouldn't be as hard as it would be with other characters because they're moves similar.  It'll help you with anti-air SRKs, zoning, blocking if you let them in, etc. Although, when your knocked down, DO NOT spam wake-up SRK. It will not help your blocking and defense.
