Makoto: How to get in on a character that uses projectiles?

I've had a lot of trouble getting in on fireball characters like sagat, ryu, and especially guile. I know that Tsurugi can go over fireballs, but you can't use it to avoid everything. I always get to a point where I'm a quarter of the screen away from them, right out of range of a tsurugi. If I jump I get SRK'd or FK'd, If I focus through it same thing. Any suggestions?

Try using her forward + MP special normal.  She slides up just a bit and you can still block or focus after the recovery frames.  Its an easy way to inch closer to your opponent because Makoto's dash covers so much screen, characters like Ryu Guile or Sagat can easily punish you if you try to FADC forward through them to get in especially if you are the whole screen away.

Doing forward + MP to inch close and neutral jump over fireballs could easily put you into a position where you can open up your options.  You can full out level two focus a spammed fireball if you're close enough and your opponent is dumb enough (Makoto's focus attack as you probably already know covers a decent amount of space and goes over low pokes.  You can get a little close so you can actually space and inch your way to get into tsurugi range.

ALSO.  if you can accurately predict a fireball or the guy is spamming it, use your ultra 2 dude.  You can always counterpick your opponent's character choice with any ultra you want (in online play).  You can easily focus attack back dash cancel out of those projectiles until you have your Ultra.  And by that time a smart player will relax a little bit with the fireballs and if not...

Time a fireball, catch him off guard with Ultra 2, high jump cancel into MK tsurugi and finish it off with an EX hayate.  I guarantee your opponent will chill out with projectiles after you punish them with that combo.  If you don't finish them off with an Ultra 2, you've either got your opponent in the corner (if you finished with an ex hayate), or you are already inside and they can't tech that knockdown so you have time to initiate your wake-up mix-up strategy.

take your time! block, neutral jump, focus dash, it's the same method for all characters that don't have fireballs.

I've said it before and I'll say again taking a little chip is better than eating a DP. Patience is the key, then when you're in range thats the time to punish a lazy fireball by jumping over or using a special that beats fireballs

also if you are focusing through and eating something after you do it try back dashing every now and then and safe jump over the next fireball
