Advice using a stick with charge characters

I'm pretty new to using a stick and from what I read, when playing, it's better to not ride the gate to do fireballs and shoryukens. What about with charge characters? Is it generally better to not hold the stick all the way to the gate and try to find the spot where the direction clicks? I find myself holding the direction all the way to the gate whenever I charge. Any advice is appreciated, as I know, there is no "right" answer to this.

Assuming you are using a square gate stick:

I personally would find it extremely difficult to not hold it to the gate if you are charging.  Its easier to just let it rest in the down-back corner of the gate to be sure.  If you aren't pushing or letting it rest all the way to the side, you can easily slip and mess up your charge or let go of your block or anything can really happen.  I don't feel like I would be completely in control if I wasn't riding the gate

It's gonna click just before you get to the edge anyway so it wouldnt make sense to try and precisely hover the stick right before the gate and right after it clicks.

I believe the same would apply to motion characters as well.  Doing a shoryuken for instance, you'd want to hit forward at the edge, then the downback corner and the downforward corner to make sure you are hitting the right spots to execute the input of the move properly.

I mean this is just me and my opinion but in general, there isn't anything wrong with hitting the edge of the gate, and in all honesty I think it helps to use the entirety of the stick and its gate to be more precise with your inputs.

I find that riding the gate is essential with Charge characters, actually.  It's a great way to let yourself know that you're building a charge.  Without riding the gate, you could accidentally slip your stick in a different direction and lose your charge.  By resting your stick right on the corner, you can keep your charge going without ever running the risk of losing it, unless you want to.

A lot of people ride the gate. There's no wrong or right way to do it, you just go with what feels right. Your technique will change and evolve as you get better. Time and practice is your only remedy.
