What characters is a good counterpick against a real good Honda?

Which character would have a better chance against a really defensive Honda player?

If you're looking for a really specific answer, the Abel/Honda match is better for Abel now in Super Street Fighter 4. In vanilla, Abel could aggressively mix Honda up as long as he didn't have meter; once he got it though, Abel had to play very carefully in order to avoid big damage from EX Headbutt.

In Super Street Fighter 4, Abel can punish all of Honda's Headbutts on block, including the EX version, with a reversal Ultra 2 (Breathless) for 400 or more damage. Honda is taking a huge risk when using any Headbutt vs. Abel, and this can give you more freedom to aggressively walk Honda into the corner once your Ultra is stocked. Once Abel lands a step kick or gets a knockdown, he can threaten with his full range of mixups or ambiguous roll setups that can bait the punishable headbutt, set up damage, and cause Honda to lose his charge.

Abel's Ultra 2 can also be used to punish Honda's neutral jump fierce, which further limits his ability to zone you and allows you to walk him down. Nobody can teach you how to play footsies, but just be careful when you're in range of Honda's good pokes, and you should be fine.

any character with good zoning tools such as a fireball. Ryu, Sagat, Akuma, Dhalsim and Chun-Li are good picks. They can all keep him at bay with their fireballs and can punish him for jumping over them.

There is a great website called www.streetfighterdojo.com - on that site you click on a character, then you are brought to the opponent page. On that page you choose the match-up you want to see. Eg Chun-Li vs E.Honda. It will tell you who the best players are using the selected characters and there will be an archive of high level matches for you to view. That way you can see how those matches should be played and learn what to do vs a Honda with any selected character.

Note that this website is an archive of Street Fighter IV Videos not Super Street Fighter IV. However the match-ups and tactics still very much apply. You can always study YouTube videos for some SSFIV action.

a really defensive other character. the way a lot of players play against honda is getting a life lead and then sitting on it forcing him to move forward.

Hondas worst matches are ryu, sagat, guile and chun-li, others that can cause problems are ken, akuma, dalsim. so any of those characters would be a good counter pick.

Honda players struggles against players that can zone well but that isn't always enough just to throw fireball a good Honda will just neutral jump them all day so getting close to him safely to land an overhead or a throw is the key.

so a basic strategy is throw a fireball and walk forward behind the fireball if he jumps anti air him if he blocks and you are near enough you can throw overhead or start a block string on him. be careful though if he blocks and has meter he can ex headbutt your attack after he blocks the fireball, the timing has to be tight.

Against a turtle player, the best choice is overhead attacks like foward+mp from ryu. its not the ONLY thing u should do but most players dont use this and prefer to jump to hit up, wich is the worst choice against a turtle player. grabs are good too. or you can be in defensive too, like ian moran said.
