How can I best setup my network for optimal online play?

Are there any particular ports that should be open in my firewall, etc for the best online play possible?

Is there a specific best setup that people use?

From what XBox told me on the phone was all that port stuff doesn't even work or it doesn't really do to much to help your connection, just as MrValdez said.

Fast ISP

Call your internet provider and ask them what your exact upload and download speed is.

Download speed is how fast you gather data upload speed is how fast you send that data out there and both are very important.

I have Comcast and acording to them i have 20Mb download 7Mb upload and that works great for me.

Wired Connection

Wireless is good if you have no other alternative but its always iffy; things like bad weather, the XBox being too far away from the router and interference from other devices (other game systems, microwaves, cell phones) can all interfere with your connection.

Having a wired connection removes all of these problems and is always going to be faster than wireless for a number of reasons.

Router

If you have to go wireless, look for a wireless N gigabit router as they put out a signal that most other devices don't use so there's less interference from other devices.

Personally I use a Linksys WRT330N wireless router + 25 foot CAT6 Ethernet Cables

Using computers or having more than 1 person on a console at a time can run down your connection but there are YouTube videos you can use (and you can search Google) to figure out how to configure your router's software so that certain devices get priority over others when it comes to how much bandwidth they consume.

Here's a recap of my setup:

  • XBox 360/Ps3/Wii/Dreamcast
  • 3 CAT 6 cables 25 feet in length for my room
  • Linksys WRT330N wireless gigabit router $150 on eBay (it's probably way cheaper now)
  • Comcast Internet/TV/Phone combo, 20Mb download, 7Mb Upload (20Mb download 30Mb upload according to speedtest.net) for $160 a month
  • Custom router software setup (im not giving up all my secrets) :)

This is what you need for an optimal online play:

1) Fast ISP

2) No one using the Internet to download/torrent

3) Wired connection

Nothing else matters.
