choosing a character that suits your style is the most important thing in the long run. Do you like to play a rushdown character with lots of mixups? If you do then try C.Viper or Abel.

Do you like to play a solid defensive keep out game? Dhalsim or Guile would be a good choice.

Do you like to do massive damage from just one hit? Zangief, T-Hawk or E.Honda would be good for that.

If you like to play footsies with your opponent and punish wiffed pokes etc then Chun-Li, Fei Long and M.Bison may be for you.

I'd say just experiment with as many characters as you want until you find a character that seems right for you. Ignore tier lists and don't worry about whether people say that character is bad. To start off with just have fun and use someone you enjoy.

That's the best starting point. (",)

I agree with the charge characters thing, but it is possible (eg Shizza), as for a new character it depends on your style, but if you want the closest thing to ryu with easy links, ill have to say go with Cody, his BnB is ridiculously easy

i dont take that as an excuse i also use pad and i do pretty damn good

yes using an arcade stick is better from what i hear but there are very successful tourny players who use pad my advice to you is practice practice practice its really the only true way to get better at execution

as far as characters are concerned if you a ryu fan i would point towards all the shoto characters ken, sakura, dan yada yada yada or maby wrestlers are more your style

Damn no Cammy love? Her BNBs aren't hard on a pad although her TK. Dive Kick may be a bit tougher to pull off. She does solid damage and is hard to zone out. Her quick foot speed and dash gives her great mobility and her Cannon Spike (Burst Kick) gives her a great anti air that has a lot of active frames which can nail late or back jumps.

Fei-long is another good character choice for pad users.   I think a really good Fei-long player named Inthul was a pad user himself.   3-hit rekkas are easier to execute on pad than joysticks I found.
