Noob Replacing Chun-li
I've recently started playing Fighting Games in a more serious fashion but I am a complete noob. I now play Chun-Li due to her great pokes and decent punishing tools but never really liked her as a character overall. I was wondering what other characters have good pokes and have decent punishes and zoning tools (I don't mean just projectiles) but are still beginner friendly? I'm thinking Balrog and maybe Yang?

Ryu and Ken come to mind right away, very well-rounded characters as far as your descriptions go.
Balrog seems to be a popular choice as well, he mostly gets by on godly normals and damage output.
Juri is kinda easy to pick up in a beginner sense, but she has worse normals than Chun, and is even harder to master.
Let me know if you change your mind about Chun, the SF4 Chun-Li subforum is among the best that I've been a part of. lol
I think that Ryu is more balanced than Ken; Ken doesn't have the zoning tools that Ryu although he has a much better poke game. Balrog has great zoning because of his dash punches, as well the best jab in the game, which helps in getting out of a huge number of situations. - casperOne ♦ Jun 9 '11 @ 19:36

That's what you should be doing for most part. As Chun-Li, you have some of the best normals/pokes and the game, and you want to keep people out, and then land your bnbs in case they get near. She uses U1 against shotos/fireballers and U2 against others I guess.
The advanced stuff like Lightning Kick loops and punishes with stomp kick can come later.
She's not too popular because it takes a long time to master her and the said advanced stuff. She also has problematic matchups against popular competitive characters (Rufus, Viper Akuma)
Balrog was a character I liked but dropped when I was way less serious about the game so I think I may pick him up over Chun-Li if he has good zoning and punishing tools. Personally I don't hate Chun and I really like her moves but I feel that when I'm playing her I don't really know what my objective is and I'm just trying to out poke the oponent.
