What is the most effective way to learn a new character?

I'm currently considering learning Ibuki in Super SFIV to have her as an alternative character to my main. What would you say is the best way to learn a new character aside from learning Bread and Butter combos, anti-air normals and things of that nature?

I don't intend on using her in battle straight away, I'm more intent on a solid way to learn her tools in training mode and gradually apply them to real matches.

From what I gather it sounds like you have a good plan. The only thing I see wrong with that is that Training Mode is pretty much a controlled environment. What I'd suggest is to bring her out in some matches against friends to learn some of her match ups. You won't come out of the gate kicking ass and taking names, but  the experience with the match ups you'll get is vital.

Use her in areas where, if you really care about BP/PP, your points aren't affected such as Endless Battle or Team Battles. How I like to do it is to kind of stick with them exclusively for a few days to get a feel for them. In essence, what I suggest is that you get your ass handed to you a few times before you start getting better. Reflect on each match (or use your Battle Log Replays) to pinpoint your weaknesses with that character and to think about what options you had in a given situation.

That's about all I have. Hope it helps!

First, I do trials, then i do 100% training mode for a day or so until i can consistently land combos (i do each combo 10x in each direction, if i mess up... i start over) then I move on to about 80% training mode 20% online to learn matchups.

Right now, im learning Makoto. I started online just doing the basics, but now that I can land Hayate feint combos 80% of the time, I go for them pretty frequently online so that i get the experience of executing them when "the pressure" is on (at least as much pressure as online can provide lol).

So far, its worked out pretty well. I get wailed on a lot with her, but each day/match that goes on I'm getting wailed on less and less and able to execute more and more.

I learn my character(s) a bit differently than the rest of the group.

How good are your fundamentals for any fighting game? If I gave you a copy of say, SVC:Chaos, and had a match with you, would you be messing up fireballs, only using the strongest attacks, never blocking and mashing until it works? I'm sure that would not happen, but if it does, get back to the basics.

Assuming that you know the basics, I would start off by learning the combos that would matter the most in real matches. Get those down, then spend the rest of the time playing against people. You will learn more about your character in battle than you would in the training room. Why? Each character has a certain psychology about them and you'll find that most people you play against have very clear patterns to handle it.  It's not about gimmicks and such, but people will show you how they play the character and the weaknesses associated with that character pretty quickly. This will work for about 80% of your opponents.

Once you get up to a higher level of play, you want to fine tune what you are already doing to make yourself better. Really get into the grind and play, as much as you can,  against the best opponents you can find.

I agree ... Clearing atleast MOST of the trials if the first thing I do to get a good feel for the character and then I go to Training Mode to practice some combos.

Then after that I got to Arcade and make sure I can hit a moving target that is fighting back. I do arcade mode because I need to see my life bar.  In training I have nothing to lose but in arcade mode it is possible to lose the match so I will play more realistic that going for things that could cost me the match.

Then when I feel a little confident I take the character online and start learning how to deal with human opponents.
